Nepal Health Conclave 2024 Kicks Off, Focuses on Brain Drain and Healthcare Strengthening

Kathmandu: Minister for Health and Population, Pradip Paudel, highlighted the challenges of reversing the brain drain of Nepali health professionals working abroad while inaugurating the two-day Nepal Health Conclave 2024 in Kathmandu.
Speaking at the event, Minister Paudel stated that while it is difficult to bring back health sector human resources currently employed overseas, the government is committed to initiatives that would encourage capable professionals to return. He underscored the need to tackle brain drain by utilizing the skills and experience of Nepali health professionals in the diaspora.
"The conference aims to find practical solutions to stop the brain drain and strengthen collaboration between Nepali professionals at home and abroad," said Minister Paudel. He also emphasized the collective responsibility of all Nepalis to contribute to nation-building.
The conclave, themed 'Coordinating Diaspora for Healthcare Strengthening,' is organized by the Ministry of Health and Population. It seeks to promote partnerships, share knowledge, and address pressing challenges in Nepal's healthcare system.
In his remarks, Ministry Secretary Dr. Roshan Pokharel stressed that modern technology could play a vital role in improving the effectiveness of Nepal's healthcare sector. He expressed hope that the conference would provide actionable insights for addressing the issues faced by the diaspora Nepali community and the healthcare system.
World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in a video message, extended his best wishes for the conference's success. He highlighted the essential role of health workers as the backbone of healthcare systems and called for global unity among health professionals to strengthen healthcare infrastructures.
The conclave will conclude after two days of discussions on strategies to prevent brain drain and enhance healthcare partnerships.
